Letter from the Editor (Winter 2022)

First things first: hello and nice to meet you! Our introduction has been a long time coming and I apologize that it didn’t come sooner. As Mattias mentioned in his Letter from the Editor last spring, my name is Amielle and I’ve been working behind the scenes, as it were, for the last little while. Much of it has been finding my footing here in the Saskatchewan film scene and with the Filmpool in general and Splice specifically.

I appreciate the Splice committee for being willing to take a chance on an “outsider” and welcoming me among the group. I’ve learned lots and am keen to keep on doing so!

If you haven’t already, I’d encourage you to take a read through our Winter micro-Issue. Mattias interviewed Filmpool member Elian Mikkola on their latest project Carcass: The Posthistoric Queer, which was shown at Neutral Ground in Regina from September 24 to November 12 last fall. In the interview, Mikkola talks about transitioning, both in terms of gender and in terms of between life and death and the questions many people have as they navigate both.

We also welcomed a new writer to the Splice masthead with Rebekah’s summary of the ninth annual Saskatchewan Independent Film Awards (SIFA). It was Rebekah’s first time at the awards ceremony, and it was fun to read about the event from her perspective. As a first-year film student, her enthusiasm at finding and exploring more about the Saskatchewan film community is palpable and it’s encouraging to know there are people in this province who are looking for and excited about the independent film work happening here.

This Winter 2022 Issue taught me a lot and I’m eager to put those lessons into what we have coming up next. Especially since this year marks Filmpool’s 45th Anniversary and we’ve got some fun and nostalgic ideas we’re working on behind the scenes here. Keep an eye out on The Dailies as they hit your inbox for upcoming call-outs for writers for upcoming stories and, if you have something you think we should include in an upcoming issue, please don’t hesitate to send a pitch about it my way! I’m sure there are more stories and ideas out there than we’ve come up with so far and I’d love to hear them. If that’s something you’d like to do, you can check out our pitch guidelines here

With that, I look forward to sharing what we have in store for our Spring 2023 Issue with you all and to celebrating everything Splice has done during its inception and what it will continue to do moving forward!

Cheers,

Amielle
